The Preamble to the Constitution of St. John & St. Mary Parish Council
states:
1. “We, the clergy, religious and laity of the Church of St. John & St.
Mary, in response to the Second Vatican Council, hereby unite to form a Parish
Council to further the mission of Christ among us in a coordinated and unified
manner, to unite ourselves into one community as members of the Body of Christ,
to recognize & exercise our responsibilities and duties as members of
this council of God.”
2. PARISH MISSION STATEMENT (as articulated in the
Constitution) We are a people of St. John & St. Mary in Chappaqua, N.Y.
of diverse background and ethnic origins united by God, formed by the Gospels,
strengthened by the Sacraments and the teachings of the Catholic Church.
We seek to deepen our personal union with Jesus Christ and to grow as a faith
community. We seek to enrich our heritage of care and concern for all by
sharing God’s love and healing to the world around us. Guided by the Holy
Spirit, we pledge ourselves to pursue this mission by participation in the
liturgical, educational and social ministries of the Church. We recognize
that to be effective, these ministries require spiritual, physical and financial
resources and that we accept our responsibility as Christian Stewards to
provide them.
3. Through its committees and its monthly meetings, the Parish
Council assists the pastor in the administration of the parish, makes recommendations
about spiritual and temporal matters facing the parish, provides ongoing
study of the needs of the parish, develops programs to meet those needs,
and cooperates with the wider Church in the Vicariate, the Archdiocese and
universally.
